18세기 이탈리아, 파두아.
식물의 독을 이용해 인간을 독 체질로 만드는  비밀 연구에 몰두하는 박사 라파치니는 오직 딸 베아트리체를 지키기 위해 세상과 단절한 채 정원을 만들어낸다.
그 독으로 인해 베아트리체는 세상으로부터 보호 받지만, 

동시에 세상과 철저히 격리된다.​

예술가가 되길 꿈꾸는 청년 지오바니는 ‘진정한 아름다움’을 좇아 파두아에 오고, 우연히 라파치니의 정원에 발을 들인다.
베아트리체의 아름다움과 외로움에 사로잡힌 그는 그녀와의 만남을 통해 따뜻함과 사랑을 처음으로 경험한다.

그러나 지오바니가 독의 영향을 받기 시작하며 라파치니는 자신의 딸과 그녀의 세계를 지키기 위해 더욱 집착하고,
